Gifts for a 4-Year-Old Girl at a Birthday Party, Under $15

4 picks · last checked on

Four-year-old birthday parties are the peak of obligation gifting. The whole preschool class is invited, you have met the birthday child twice at pickup, and the going rate is somewhere between ten and fifteen dollars.

At four you cannot buy on interests. Not because four-year-olds do not have them, but because they hold them for about a fortnight and you learned this one from a party invitation. So the useful filter is about the receiving household rather than the child:

How much of this ends up on someone else’s floor?

That is the axis below, and it is not squeamishness. A craft gift at four either comes with a parent’s afternoon attached or it does not, and the ones that do not are the ones that get used repeatedly instead of once, supervised, on a Sunday. Every pick here is a creative gift that a four-year-old can be handed without an adult committing to sit down.

What I skip, and why

Paint, glitter, slime, and kinetic sand. All four are genuinely fun and all four are a decision you are making about somebody else’s house. Glitter in particular is a gift with a half-life measured in months.

Bead and jewellery-making kits. The good ones are aimed at six and up, the ones aimed at four have pieces small enough to worry about, and either way the beads end up under the sofa.

Anything with more than a handful of pieces to keep together. At four, a set that goes missing a piece reads as broken and stops being played with.

Character merchandise. Same reasoning as every other age band, only more so — four-year-old franchise loyalty is fierce and extremely short-lived.

Dress-up costumes. Sizing, and a very specific guess about what this child wants to pretend to be.

Anything electronic that sings. Preschool birthday parties produce enough noise gifts already; do not be the fourth.

A year on, the same party looks quite different — see birthday gifts for a 5-year-old boy under $20, where a child can start to keep track of pieces and the budget stretches further.

Four with nothing to clean up

All under fifteen dollars, all creative, and none of them requiring a parent to sit down and supervise. That last part is what makes them get used more than once.
